Position Summary
Under limited supervision, the Structural Engineer is responsible for designing, planning and overseeing the construction of new buildings or alterations and extensions to existing properties or other structures. Employees in this job class are responsible for analyzing building materials for use in construction and for ensuring projects comply with all applicable codes and regulations. This job class requires knowledge of structural configurations, construction methods, construction practices and the ability to advise on needed improvements.

Typical Duties:
Develops blueprints or specifications for use during construction.
Investigates immediate loads and demands on structures, as well as any likely future changes to ensure that the structure is designed to withstand the loads.
Monitors structures for safety.
Designs refurbishment schemes for existing structures.
Works closely with architects to achieve sustainable solutions.
Analyzes configurations of basic structural components of a building or other structure.
Calculates the pressures, stresses and strains that each component, such as a beam or lintel, will experience from other parts of a structure due to human use or environmental pressures such as weather or earthquakes.
Considers the strength of various materials, e.g. timber, concrete, steel and brick, to see how their inclusion may necessitate a change of structural design.
Acts as a liaison with other designers, including architects, to come to an agreement on safe designs and their fit with the aesthetic concept of the construction.
Examines structures at risk of collapse and advises on how to improve structural integrity; such as recommending removal or repair of defective parts or rebuilding the entire structure.
Makes drawings, specifications and computer models of structures for building contractors.
Works with geotechnical engineers to investigate ground conditions and analyses results of soil samples and tests.
Works closely with construction contractors to ensure that newly erected buildings are structurally sound.
Uses computers and computer-aided design (CAD) technology for simulation purposes.
Performs other duties and special projects as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Seven or more years of combined experience in commercial building management, general maintenance and construction skills including mechanical, HVAC, carpentry, electrical, plumbing, and painting, construction and manufacturing process engineering;
Knowledge of federal contracting requirements preferred;
Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology, (ABET) preferred;
High level of computer expertise including word processing, spreadsheet, AutoCAD, project, Internet, and presentation software applications;
Knowledge of construction methods and the ability to manage a construction project;
Knowledge of Cal OSHA and OSHA occupational safety regulations; Fire, Hazmat, Title 22, and California and local building codes;
Ability to create comprehensive drawings and write corresponding specifications;
Supervisory skills to hire qualified employees, provide for their professional development, administer performance management and disciplinary processes effectively, and address employee relations appropriately;
Ability to effectively supervise and develop assigned team to meet production/service goals while adhering to safety policies and rules;
Effective oral and written communication skills using appropriate business English;
Demonstrated leadership, organizational, common sense and problem solving skills;
Human relation skills to build effective relationships with team and customers;
Effective customer service skills;
Intermediate computer literacy including knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, database and presentation software;
Knowledge of business English including vocabulary and spelling;
Fundamental mathematical ability including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division;
Ability to establish priorities and solve operational problems;
Flexibility to respond to changing work priorities and handle numerous projects at the same time.
